An author's workspace with manuscripts and warm lighting

Chapter One — Where Every Book Begins

Your Manuscript Deserves a Publishing Story Worth Telling

Most authors don't need another checklist. They need a partner who understands the arc — from the first uncertain draft to the day a reader turns page one. That's the work we do at The Book Model.

"I came with a folder of loose chapters and left with a book that felt like mine — only sharper, truer, and ready." — Harriet Voss, debut novelist, 2024

The Publishing Timeline — Six Milestones, One Story

Every book follows a path. Here's how yours unfolds with us — not as a rigid process, but as a narrative we shape together.

Milestone 1 — The Conversation

Before we touch a single page, we listen. A 45-minute discovery call maps your vision, audience, and the kind of book you want in the world. No templates. No pressure. Just honest dialogue about what your manuscript needs next.

Milestone 2 — Structural Editing

We read the full manuscript and return a structural report — not generic notes, but a chapter-by-chapter map of what's working, what's drifting, and where the narrative spine needs reinforcement. Typical turnaround: 18 working days for manuscripts up to 90,000 words.

Tom Ashcroft, memoir author: "The structural edit changed the book completely. They found the thread I'd been circling for two years."

Milestone 3 — Line & Copy Editing

Sentence-level precision. We tighten prose, fix inconsistencies, and polish voice without erasing it. Two rounds of tracked changes with margin comments, so you always understand the reasoning behind each edit.

Milestone 4 — Cover & Interior Design

Your book's visual identity — cover concept, typography, interior layout, and print-ready files. We present three cover directions and refine your choice through two revision cycles. Interior design includes chapter openers, running heads, and back matter formatting.

Rina Okafor, poetry collection: "The cover stopped people mid-scroll. That alone changed everything for launch."

Milestone 5 — Production & Proofing

Final proofreading, ISBN registration guidance, ebook conversion (EPUB3 & KF8), and print-on-demand file preparation. We test across six reading devices and three print trim sizes before sign-off.

Milestone 6 — Launch & Beyond

A launch brief with metadata optimisation, distributor setup advice, and a 30-day post-publication check-in. We don't disappear after delivery — the first month on shelves matters as much as the last edit.

Daniel Frey, business author: "They stayed involved weeks after launch. That kind of follow-through is rare."

"A book is not finished when it is written. It is finished when it reaches the reader it was meant for."

Why We Work Differently

Publishing has industrialised. Manuscripts move through assembly lines — a structural editor here, a proofreader there, a designer who never reads the text. The result is competent but hollow. Books that look right but don't feel right.

At The Book Model, one lead editor follows your project from first conversation to final file. They know your voice, your intentions, your audience. When the cover designer begins, they've already read the editorial brief. When the proofreader works, they understand the stylistic choices that were made deliberately.

This continuity isn't a luxury. It's the reason our authors consistently say the finished book feels like theirs — not like a product assembled by strangers.

We take on a limited number of manuscripts at any time. Currently, we begin two to three new projects per month. This isn't artificial scarcity — it's the only way to maintain the depth of attention each book requires.

Is This the Right Fit?

We're a strong match if…

  • You've written a manuscript (or most of one) and want expert guidance to the finish line
  • You value editorial integrity over speed
  • You're publishing independently or hybrid and want professional-grade results
  • You want a single point of contact, not a rotating team
  • You're writing fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, or essay collections

We may not be the right fit if…

  • You need a ghostwriter to produce the manuscript from scratch
  • You're looking for the lowest-cost editing available
  • Your timeline requires a full book in under two weeks
  • You need academic or technical journal formatting
  • You want a fully managed marketing campaign (we focus on the book itself)

What Authors Have Said

"They treated my memoir like it mattered — because to me, it did. The structural edit was the turning point. I finally understood what the book was really about."

— Leena Marchetti, memoirist

"I'd worked with two other editors before. Neither came close. The line editing was surgical and respectful — they made my prose better without making it theirs."

— James Whittle, literary fiction

"The cover design process was collaborative in a way I didn't expect. Three directions, honest feedback on each, and a final result that genuinely represents the book."

— Priya Anand, short story collection

"From the discovery call to the launch brief, I never felt like a number. They remembered details from our first conversation months later."

— Oliver Byrne, narrative non-fiction
